    I think that hermits are opportunists and will try to eat anything given the chance, it's just their nature and nothing that you can do anything about.

    Regarding the algae, what happened could be that the brown algae grew and in doing so utilised some of the Nitrate production. When it died it probably released a lot back into the water column. I think the best thing to do is to just clean any filter pads you have on a weekly basis or even remove them completely.
