I have a coral here Im not sure what it is..in fact if anyone can identify it I would really appreciate it , but more importantly, there is something killing it i think. My parameters are good i use rodi water and phosph and nitrates are usually 0. I think I have a cyano problem that I am about to dose chemiclean to try and rid it. The coral, in the picture, is losing its skin in the top right. The green polyps are disappearing and the brown color is peeling off like old skin. It is not completely bleach underneath but a much lighter shade of brown. I blasted my cyano with a baster this morning and decided to blast this thing and I shot off all its dead skin or whatever was covering the top right of the coral. Im not sure if this problem is spreading on the same coral or not. Ive heard it could heal up or completely die from this and I also heard it could be competing with diatoms. Any help is appreciated thank you all 3reef.

A few things jump out at me in this post. The nitrate/phosphates usually 0, is one thing. If there is any algae in the tank you are getting a false reading to begin with, so if you get a reading it is actually higher. Second is cyano, that tells me you have excess nutrients (same as previous). Diatoms? Is this a newer tank? Diatoms will eat up silicates in the water, if no silicates are present there will be no diatoms. If the tank is new, then this could be a phase it is going through. If not new, then have you added anything plastic/acrylic to the tank recently? Any new sand/rocks?

What do you have for lights?

How fast is this die off spreading?

Also if you could list current params, as many as you can, we will definitely try to help you get to the bottom of it.

    The coral is a Turbinaria.

I'm guessing this is a parameter issue. Please provide the following:
    Temp
    Salinity
    Ammonia
    Nitrites
    Nitrates
Phosphates (how are you testing for these? Test kit type/brand?)
    Calcium
    Alkalinity
    Magnesium

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
It looks like a Yellow Scroll coral (Turbinaria). While hardy they require water parameters much like sps corals with stable Ca/alk/magnesium levels.

    All parameters please, including SG.

I would not use chemclean until you figure out what is going on with the coral, I doubt cyano is killing it, perhaps Dino but not cyano. If it's getting covered with algae quickly try giving it more flow.
