I put a new long tentacled coral into my 120 litre marine tank on Sunday. Last night one of my anenomes left it's fairly new spot (1 week?) where it had been basking happily and "ran away to hide." This morning I couldn't find it and an hour or so later my hubby said the water was cloudy so he did a 20% water change. He checked amonia and said it was clear.

I got home at 8pm and found one piece of the enenome up where he had gone to hide and another down witht he long tentacled coral. I am guess the LTC has stung my anenome it has run away to escape but died. Am I thinking right here?

My question now is do I need to go through the tank looking for any other fragments of anenome (I have no idea how much it would shrink when dead) as I don't want my amonia or nitrates to spike and kill all my wet pets ! Or do I do loads of water change ( how much is too much)

I don't know how long the LTC stingers might be, maybe I need to put a barrier up between him and the others and move him on to another home?

Are rotifers enough to feed the new monster in the immediate future. I'm thinking he might need to give him a new home quickly.

My tank has 2 clown fish, 1 teeny tiny six striped pajama wrasse that I love, one small pink tipped anenome who is 20 centimeters away from the LTC ( big anenome was 10 cm away) 1 green gornotropia 35 cms away, 1 leather coral 25 cms away and two other unidentified corals about 40 cm away.

Please give me advice so I can give my animals the best chance to live through this, I am under the impression it might be really bad news for my tank overall.

the fact that you dont have a skimmer yet would make me want to find the rest of the dead anenome.

    Welcome to 3Reef Ashatani !

The addition of a good skimmer will certainly help a great deal. Since the water was/is cloudy but no spike in ammonia I question if your anemone has died or simply moved. An anemone can shrink to the size of a quarter and expand to softball and larger – very impressive.

The clouded water may have been a bacteria bloom causing the anemone to be irritated and move away.

I would suggest you in a minimum run fresh carbon, look for the anemone get that skimmer up and continue with water changes.

Thankyou for your quick replies and your warm welcome. I hope to become a member of the community here and feel a little embarrassed that I have joined with an emergency right off ( but pretty impresed you guys have an emergency thread!). I am sure my anenome is dead as I found two sizable pieces of it. I can't be sure it is the whole thing so I am working on finding the rest of the anenome right now. I think he moved away last night after being stung because I thought he looked stressed at the end of the night and I was surprised at the new spot he moved to. My guess is he died in his hiding spot and although a piece of him stayed on his rock, the other bit fell down to where LTC was waiting for his body.

I know the lack of skimmer is a really awful thing,:-[ I bought the set up as it had been running for 2.5 years from ebay and the previuos owner convinced me I didn't need it. A few forums later and I ordered one from the internet and expected it to arrive Monday. I will also do another big water change in the morning and check readings every few hours. I fed the LTC a frozen rotifer cube and have put a the hospital floater over the LTC for tonight. Hopefully this is enough to keep him from killing anyone else while they sleep.

Do you guys know how long the stingers are likely to be? I have searched the net but not been able to find an answer.

Plate corals inflate and double and the tentacles can reach fairly far – all a little different, you will need to keep an eye on him to know for sure.

I am still a little confused as to why your anemone would be in pieces – if he was stung and injured I would expect him to retreat, shrink and die (and melt into pieces – but this would be over a couple of days)

If you are finding chunks that you can grab and are not melting as you touch them – then I wonder if this just happened and he got caught in a pump. Is this possible?

Either way, keep the fresh carbon running.
