Skimmer/return/fuge, T'ed off overflow to skimmer and fuge area.

Knock out the walls on each of those tanks and make one long one? Silicone is like 4 bucks a tube. If you have the space that is....

If the fuge overflows into the return section, and the skimer flows into the return section, then you only have one return section. That's where your pump goes, and it pushes water back up to the DT. The overflow in the DT doesn't require a pump; it just lets "extra" water flow down to the sump.

I do fuge/skimmer/return and have tons of pods swimming around. Sure... some pods may get caught by the skimmer with this setup, but they seem to be proliferating regardless so I don't really worry about this.
Your pods will also stay in the fuge if you have rock and chaeto for them to hold on to.

You're either giving too much flow to the fuge, or too little to the skimmer that way. They have far different requirements to fulfill their job as efficiently as possible.

Put a U Tube overflow box over the edge. No guarantees with a U Tube under low flow conditions, though. Bubbles will likely build up in it and flood your stand and/or living room. No other method is going to work and be safe.

Either you drill, use one tank, or go unreliable. Drilling is by far the best option, and is pretty easy to boot. A 10g tank is typically on sale for a whopping $1 per gallon at PetCo a couple times per year if you break the first.
