Hey guys, forum newbie here. Have had my 48 gal bowfront for 7 years and my Euro Reef skimmer just died. Was pretty happy with its performance but bought a Chinese piece of crap skimmer in an emergency. I am looking at the Reef Octopus 4 or 6 with the new gate valve to replace it. Heres my question if i have 48 gal in the tank and 15 in the sump should the rated capacity of the skimmer be 100 or 150? About 5 fish, couple of shrimp, soft corals and the usual snails. Probably considered a medium bio-load. Also any suggestions on an overflow box would be appreciated. I have a gravity u bend pipe that is collecting bubbles and driving me crazy. Have heard good and bad about the CPR CS90 box but would have to buy the lift pump to ensure re start when power out. Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to 3reef

It is a good idea to get a skimmer that is rated twice your DT so you have room for expansion and most skimmers are rated for a light load.

Over the side overflows all have the same issue you need to maintain them often to keep bubbles down.

Thanks 2in10. I was kinda leaning toward the philosophy of bigger is better but didnt want to mismatch. Sounds like the 150 is right on the money. Is super frustrating though that no-one has come up with a solution for the air bubbles in the u bend. Like a nipple maybe?
