Check my tank thread out John. I have the same fixture as you do. I have two clams in there on the bottom. Most of my lps are on the bottom. And I spent all day yesterday moving all my favia lower because it was actually starting to burn them a little.( It was just easier then raising my lights.);)
I just hate to see you use extra bulbs when it really isn't neccesary unless of course you plan on adding more sps besides that monti. which will also do fine as long as you keep it near the top.6 bulbs will work but as John said you will def. want to raise them a bit.Good luck.

    I am guessing your foot print is 48 x 18 x 24.

It should not hurt the ballast because bulbs are usually paired and so that part of the ballast will just not run.

I am with you on the white LED. I have read that even with the new generation of white LED that corals brown out. This is common from my reading with the color spectrum of less than 10000K. I read where one frag farmer had Geisemann 11000K daylight bulbs browning out his frags. Apparently the spectrum causes brown zooxanthellae to take off.

Now that I'm thinking about it would be 24" deep. When I have to work on the sand bed I'm almost to my shoulder.

I'll check it out, do you have link or is it under your profile page? I wanted the ability to put whatever i wanted. I have turned down a dozen or so frags, because my light wouldn't support them. I wasn't going to take, so they would just die. That would of been selfish on my part and that is not me.

8 54 Watt T5 bulbs = 432 Watts. Thats not factoring in what the ballasts and fans draw, if it has fans. My guess is if you put that fixture on a kill a watt it would be drawing closer in the neighborhood of 500 watts.

Also, you are still looking at 170 bucks a year for bulb replacement assuming that the bulbs never increase in price. Couple that with the electricity costs and I would say its not exactly a "cheap" fixture to operate.

And I'm sorta confused on why you bring up MH lighting? Nobody here ever mentioned MH lighting so I'm not really getting your point. MH lighting is way worse than T5s on cost to run.

I would think that if you have "been doing this awhile and are technically inclined", that you would at least know the dimensions of your own aquarium.

I'm not on here to "question" everything you do. Ultimately it is your choice to run this fixture. I simply stated that it will be a somewhat costly fixture to operate, and that LEDS are more cost effective in the long run.

First off who the hell do you think you are to question me. I don't remember the measures of my tank off the top of my head, while I'm at work. You are seriously busting my chops on that? What's next, what's the serial number of my skimmer.

Every single thread I have posted on, you have tried to badger me. Do yourself a favor and mess off. Trust me those are the nicest words I could find.

For one I never asked for your input and two I'd be careful bashing people on this forum. I'm not going to have a pissing contest with you.

Last time I checked this is my setup. You seriously think this fixture is drawing 500w? Are you out of your mind?

As stated before, IMO LEDs are still unproven for their costs. And I also stated MH are still the most costly to run.
BTW, T5s have a life span of 9-18 months, depending on hours per day they are one. If cost goes up, guess what? Oh well.

What's next I should get rid of my 5.7 Dodge Ram pickup because it burns too much gas? Guess what I wanted a Dodge Ram SRT10, but couldn't find one here to my liking originally.

Oh if I was that concern about cost, I wouldn't of even started in this hobby or built a fish room to house my equipment that cost $5000.00 alone to build. That does not include any equipment.
