I know this thread is old, but in case people find it in the future looking for help...

I have this skimmer, and it works great... however, there are a few things you need to know, that are NOT in the manual.

When you first start it up (ANYTIME, NOT just the first time) - the little "water adjustment" cap on the end of the outlet.... take it off completely. Keep a close eye on the water level in the skimmer, and keep your hand on the power cord, just in case. With the outlet cap off, it will rarely spit water out, the level will rise almost to the top, then back off a little, and then a ton of bubbles shoot out of the outlet. NOW, you can slowly put the cap back on, making sure you line the slot up with the outlet slot. Again, watch the water level, and make sure it doesn't go higher than the level they recommend in the guide. It took me a few tries to figure this all out, but it works flawlessly now, and I do it without even thinking about it.

Now... when I first got it, I was NOT impressed, there seemed to be very little bubble production, and no foam at all... I even started thinking maybe my venturi was defective or broken, or that maybe it was just a piece of junk.

However, it takes a few days to "break in" properly. By the 3rd day, it was skimming hard, and pulling thick BLACK goo out. The skimmer I had before was admittedly terrible: a cheapo wooden airstone berlin airlift style. I had modified it with a much larger tube, and it was working better, however, it never got more than green tea looking junk out.

Ever since I got this Typhoon, I've been steadily pulling thick dark brown/black goo out of the tank.

While I was initially sort of annoyed by the lack of a collection cup, I came to like the added security.

Collection cups are small, and if something went nuts while you were gone (or if a snail blocked your skimmer outlet) a collection cup would fill up and overflow within minutes.

With the Typhoon, you can have it drain into a milk jug or something else that is large, and not worry about it. If something happened while you are away, you can catch a lot more water before spilling.

Sorry for the long post, and good luck!
