Can anyone tell me what this weird dark green stuff growing on my rocks is? It's growing over these corals and covering holes in the rock. I'm worried about how close it is getting to the clam in the background. Thanks.

Does it have a 'fern' look to it?

Did it appear after a brown/red algae bloom?

This is what happened in my tank when I began to establish it again. Luckily I was able to remove the rock and literally washed and brushed the living heck out of it. Then returned rock to the tank.

From what I have researched it would most likely be this "byprosis" stuff. There seems to be two types of it also.

My LFS guy says it is a beeoch to get rid of. He told me to remove the rock and let it dry out, wash it good and put back into tank. I skipped the drying out to see if just a good wash and scrub would do.

I have heard others put it in the oven and then freeze the rock, wash and scrub and then put back in tank. One other I seen nuked the rock.

From what I gather the stuff loves a lot of flow. Go figure. We look for large amounts of flow for the very reasons for this not to happen.

Well it has been four days now and my rock still is looking pretty clean. With scrubbing the green stuff off I also got rid of the majority of the brown/red stuff which began as powdery looking rusty stuff. Then manifested into that green algae.

Have two MP10's running out full and am running as best a bare bottom as I can. Have the protein skimmer running wet.

Have heard using Kent Marine M to raise MG levels really high kills the stuff but me thinks getting rock and infected sand out of there is best bet in the beginning.

There is a sticky on the site (Algae section) that hopefully will help.:-/

Need an ID of this weird green stuff.

I have this solid dark green organism growing on some of my rocks (ignore the algae). The exterior appears to made of a fibrous structure and it seems to have holes/valves in a few spots and some spikes growing upward. It is covering over everything it touches (corals/rock crevices)[IMG]

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Merged threads and moved to-------ID this.

Clam will probably be fine unless water chemistry is or becomes compromised.

You'll need to compare images of Byropsis and Green Hair algae to what you have to get the most accurate ID.

Is your clean up crew up to snuff?

Need nitrate and phosphate value as well as lighting please.
