your biggest mistake was discussing sizes
if she is not into the hobby, you could have talked about the 10ft x 2ft 30 gallon nano you where going to get

Money is the number on thing. If you have enough money - next comes space - with a large tank like that you almost need to dedicate a small room or area away from the DT for the sump/equipment/etc.

That being said, if you have enough money and space, then you MUST go large!!!

The benefits of a large over a small tank are numerous:

Larger water volume means greater stability and greater "buffering capacity" for errors on things like dosing/feeding/etc.

Also, at that size, there are very few fish that you would not be able to house successfully. You could do a mated pair of almost every fish imaginable for some really dramatic effect.

Also, with the larger volume and greater system stability you can house almost any kind of coral you could imagine.

Hope this works out for you!!!

Hahahah it's always funny to see how most people have a tough time closely estimating to volume of a tank.

    I have a 120DT and people are always like - what is that? Like a 55? or a 75? hahaha not quite . . . . .

I have the perfect solution. Offer her a trade. The bigger the fish tank I have, the bigger the ring will be that you might get! Thats it. Drop the "ring" word and girls will let you have anything. Works with my wife, lol.

it will be tough to convince your "need" to someone that has no interest in your tank or the hobby. Like kstafford said, your best bet is a trade off. i would just get it and live with the consequences.........of course i am single. :)

Hmm.. Not sure where you're going with this..

Personally when I want a bigger tank I just go get it provided of course my bills are upto date and I have the extra cash to blow on it at the time.

Wife only gets antsy when I "add" another tank.. 6 running on the main floor at the moment.

Footnote: There is only one size of tank.. TOO SMALL..

#1 she's just a girlfriend she has no say.
But you could do the trade off thing. Besides if this is what she's gonna be like being married to, as in she'll give you grief on whatever hobbies you like then maybe you need to have a talk w/her or reconsider the relationship.
It seems as if too many women dis a guys hobbies whatever they may be then wonder why they're unhappy, people have hobbies...some more than others and some more expensive than others....@ least the tanks keep you@ home and enhance the beauty of it as well.

If you have the space and the money I say. Go for the bigger tank.

It doesn't seem as if guys give us ladies grief about our hobbies.....mmmmmm wonder why that is ;)

Of course you could say that you want a bunch of other tanks for whatever sort of fish or just get a bigger tank.....I think she'd rather you just have the one one larger system, it's a bit underhanded but oh well :D
