We just recently upgraded tanks and our chili leather has recently stopped opening up. After looking at it a little closer it seems to be covered in coraline. Any suggestions on how to remove it without hurting the coral?

I have never seen anything like that before sorry

but I do worry that its closing down due to its neighbour ?
which looks close enough to sting it when both are fully expanded

Man its hard to tell a thing from those photo’s. Steve raises a good point about the neighboring nem that might have stung him. Certain leathers are known to retreat and shed their skin, I am not familiar with the chili leather at all – but I have some time and will do some research this morning. Do you have a macro lens for your camera ? would be helpful to see a more up close picture of what’s going on.

It sort of looks like its covered with Cyano. Is there any cyano present in the tank ?

Chili’s do best when mounted upside down in high flow, being non photosynthetic lighting is not important. When you upgraded your tank did you move his positioning?

It actually opened up this morning and it looked alot better. Sorry about the pics but they were taken with my phone. Even fully opened it is a good 2 inches away from the rock nem but I will still shift the chili over a few more inches under the ledge.
I do have a couple of spots in the back that have some cyano but what is on the chili is not soft it is hard and purple. Now that it has opened it seems to have made some of it fall off.
When we upgraded I just made sure it was at the bottom because we were told it didn't need light but now that we have gotten things moved where we want everything I can push it back out of any light.
Thank you both for trying to help me figure this out:)

Glad it is doing well, IMO they are very temperamental. It should slough off the rest of the coralline.
