I just spent thousands of dollars for my setup only to do it all over again with new equipment so I dont want to see anyone to have to go through what I dealt with when a lfs owner tells you one thing only to have it make things worse for you... Sorry to come acroos rude just doing my best to help not have my situation happen. My appoligies...

My experience with monits has been very good. They are very hardy. Montipora Capricornis seem to tolerate less light and maintain their color. Digitata as well are good to start sps off with. I would start with some easy things such as zoas. Some good lps to start off with are bubbles, lobo brains, favia, trumpets and frogspawns. Sounds like you are going about this the right way. Good luck.

Hi Dasco - if you like branching corals , you could consider some of the softie, finger type leather corals.
Sinularia species - finger corals - and also the Colt coral is a branching type

I guess I worded it wrong as i was meaning it as I had so many losses when I started out then again I was sold garbage equipment so it was a learning curve. I was nervous about coral at first but I am always thinking how cool they look. I have moved most of mine into the red sea since I added the emperor. You can try some stuff like mushrooms and zoas as they are easy to keep. I went to sites that sell corals and fish online and would read the how hard to keep and care of for the corals I thought were cool. I always like xenia but when I got one it grew so fast that I was worried it was going to over take the tank. Good luck with it appoligies if I appeared rude I reread it and it did come across that way.
