There is a valve between the pump and the skimmer. Set that valve halfway closed(45 degree angle) and let it run for a day or two. Then open the valve all the way and try adjusting the red know again.

I have the same skimmer and I did the same as defdad, and it reduced alot of the bubbles. If it were in a sump, would you need the return box at all?

With the red knob turned all the way down, slowly open the pump valve a little more until you start getting some bubbles. So far with me it has been trial and error. I bought mine new and it came with an instruction manual that didn't seem to help(maybe I was reading it wrong). It also said that it would take up to 72 hours for the skimmer to break in. I have no idea exactly what that means or if there is a break in period on a used one. So basically I am just winging it and since it has been running for a week, I guess it has be broken in and now I run the pump valve all the way open and adjust the red knob only. I guess it is working ok because it ends up with smelly light brown fluid slowing filling the cup. Now I just need to get rid of the bubbles from the return.

I have this same skimmer and wasn't too happy with it when it was hob,too touchy and had to constantly adjust it due to the up and down water level from evap and top offs. When I got my sump I put it in there and now it is working great, haven't had to adjust it in months since water level stays constant and even though I modified the output to cut down on micro-bubbles I don't have to worry about any now since the baffles in the sump take care of any left overs. I would reccommend using this skimmer in a sump if you have one otherwise it will be a constant pain.

anouther mod was elivating it rather than just haning it on back i lifted it about 5 inches and that helped to make the adjustments more workable i got this idea when geoff said it worked better in a sump well what is dif in a sump and hob the leval of the water outside that the filter is drawing from and returning to then i blocked off the output hose air intake
