Ok so I was examining the tank I have closely and noticed a few scratches / cracks in the bottom of the tank.

Seems like the crack in ONLY on the inside of the tank and does not go all the way through.

It is holding water without any problems.

My question is, Can I put some silcone on these cracks and also place a layer of plexi glass above the base of the tank so that when I add base rock / sand / water, the weight will be on the plexiglass as opposed to the tank?

    Please help.

    Thanks!

If it is a crack I would be very worried about it holding water. Pics would help.

Sounds like a deep scratch to me. Cracks literally destroy the structural integrity of the tank. If its a "small" crack, it'll be much, much, much larger, in no time. It might be time to hit up Craigslist or Ebay. Amazon has good stuff too.

If there's a crack there is no repairing it.

    Don't do Crack!

    Oh, that kind of crack.

So is this during a leak test, on a newly aquired tank? Sorry if I missed that

Newly acquired used tank... Leak test will be performed today. I took a quick look and thought I saw cracks but now in hindsight could have been silicone or glue...I remember rubbing one it seemed to rub off.

On that note: would it be a bad idea to silicone a piece of plexiglass to the bottom of the tank so the base rock I put in does not directly go onto the glass ?

Silicone does not stick well to plexiglass

In that case, would it be ok for me to just place the layer of plexiglass on the bottom of the tank without using any silicone and put the base rock on top ?

Most bottoms are tempered. I say most.

Some people use egg crate- rocks- then sand or CC.

I just put my large rocks on the bottom tempered glass.

I don't think putting some kind of inert protective layer would hurt at all.
Maybe you just started something- that may have been done many times.

Oh my goodness! I wouldn't even think for a moment of using that tank. It's not a pretty sight when they give way out through the bottom.
