Hey I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of why my regal tang may have died. I have a 90 gallon aquarium, all chemistry is within normal limits, my salinity is 1.022-1.024, the only parameter that was elevated was my phosphates at 1 ppm. I had the tang for about 4 days, last night it was doing fine, playing , no problem, I wake up this morning and its dead. The only occupants I have in the tank are 2 percula, 1 brittle star, 1 snowflake eel, and 20 hermit crabs, if anyone has an idea i would love to hear about it thanks:-/

How big is your tank? Did you look at the fish closely and make sure he wasn't being bullied? Chemistry good, right?

Don't know much about Eels but I've never known Tangs to be finicky. I keep my salinity higher but yours is OK. If it was systemic, then your other fish would be or should show signs of stress although clowns are pretty-much water roaches.

I would have to say, begin with the source. Especially if you've only had it a few days, I'd take a good look at where I got the fish from.

    Good Luck!:(

Can you post your actual params rather than within the limits?

And also, how long did you acclimate the fish?

    How old is your tank?

Did you see any agression from the eel?
    Any parasites symtoms?

I had the same thing with an Orange Shoulder Tang. He looked great, swimming with the other Tangs...Eating etc. died in 2 days. The only thing I could put together was either he was being bullied at night, or the salinity from the LFS was just too different. Even though I acclimated for 2 hrs as usual. I lost 2 more from the same store. His tanks and fish are very clean and healthy. I then found out he keeps his salinity at 1.017..Mine is at 1.026. I just feel that it is too much of a change, even with acclimation, along with bullying, just too much on them. Only thing I can put together..I have had great luck otherwise.

I would find out where the LFS keeps the salt level at..Also it may not be anything you did wrong at all...Sometimes fish just dont acclimate to the new home....Be prepared if you are new in the hobby. It sometimes just happens...sucks, but that is just the way it is. BTW. Nitrates are a little high...but that is not what killed your fish.

I could be a few things that could have lead to its death, as nitrates are a bit high, fish normally are fine under 20ppm. However with tangs, this does cause stress to them and tangs need a very stress free enviroment. However It also could be a vendor issue from the store you bought from and how the fish was collected. If no signs of disease are present or torn fins, scrapes etc.
