Can anyone tell me what kind of algae this is and what might have caused it? The picture is what it looks like when the power heads are turned off for a few minutes and this weird algae starts to form. When I turn the power heads back on the algae basically turns into dust and sticks on to my glass. When I clean the glass, the dusty algae settles back on it within minutes.

Is it algae or is it something else? Does it move around? Could something have spawned in your tank?

It doesn't move around, you can't see it anywhere in the tank unless I turn my vortechs off then you see what forms in the picture.

Looks like phytoplankton or dust algae. Not sure about the filaments though. That might be cyano.

Wipe it off the glass with a coffee filter and take a closer look under lights.

I did that and it looks like brown dust. It's blowing around in my water column constantly because I just put a mesh breeder into my tank and the algae was on it within minutes. It's also on the filter socks in my sump. There's no light on the sump but yet it looks like the algae is growing on the socks because there's this fuzzy algae surrounding them.

So I also just cleaned the stuff of my filter sock and I was able to recover some full pieces and it was stringy and slimy. It wasn't cyano though. It almost looks as if the many tiny "dust algae" particles come together and form silky stands. You can basically see the individual algae that make up this strand.
