    i have a 50 gallon breeder tank that i want make a reef tank some softs and sps and i was wondering what is a good lighting fixture??? the tank is 36x18x18 and i dont want to do metal halide lights

    I would suggest a 4 lamp x 39 watt canopy - with quality brand lamps (maybe not the lamps you might get with the fixure ), such as ATI or Geisseman.

    that would be adequate for all the softies you wanted to keep
    and acceptable for many SPS species , located in the upper 3rd of your set up

    +1 A 4 bulb T5 HO Teklight would do fine a 6 bulb unit might fry your corals.

    ok so a 4 lamp t-5 HO setup with what lamps though? like cooler range looks good 2 white 10000k and 2 420 nm blues?

    could do The Real 118

    2 x 10k and 2 x actinic would be a good start
    but aquablue - ATI - 12K X 2 plus 2 x Actinic would also give you a lot of par and decent overall color
