    gday people,
okay now i know i did a silly thing by buying a coral i hadnt previously researched but i did and its done now haha i bought the coral in the picture from my lfs today and didnt have time to hang around and talk about it, so not sure about what lighting levels or water levels it prefers, or for that matter what type of coral it is. so i cant even search for it and find out..so if anyone could give me the type and name of coral this is that would be a good start.
    thanks

also just wondering if its a bad thing that it retracts its tentacles at all? because they are retracted at the moment, although it is 11pm and all lights are off, so maybe it does this at night?

and yes if you havent guessed this is my first coral and ive already learnt my lesson about not researching first haha

    hey fezz

a close up would help - but it looks like a Torch coral to me

they do close up at night and sometimes put out feeder tentacles

research LPS corals and you will find it

    Hi Fezz
if my ID is correct (I have oldish eyes and its not a great picture)

not a ideal 1st coral IMO , but not a extremely difficult one either

water quality needs to be good - not ideal if you are in any doubt about your tank in relation to the cycle - 0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite and Nitrate less than 10ppm ( memory issues here)

flow, they dont like PH directed at them, but they do enjoy being wafted about a little
    get a feel for it.

lighting , what you got? they are OK with moderate lighting, but can stand higher IME

A good coral for low placement in a reef providing light and flow are still adequate at those levels

avoid touching them when they are inflated
make sure they are securely located for same reason

the flesh is easy to damage when inflated so if you knock it or it falls over, tears and splits can occur

I will have missed ,loads here, so google torch corals and get the full SP

thanks alot mate, i have a t5 light setup with one white and one blue tube.. im unsure of the exact details but i think this should be adequate, ive got the coral situated about mid level in my 24 inch deep tank and powerheads arent aimed directly at it but it has a nice subtle movement about it..it has opened up nicely and appears happy over the few hours it has been in the tank. although i am not so sure about my water parameters at the moment..if it was to become unhealthy what would i expect? tentacles not extending and so lack of colour? because if something goes astray i want to be on top of it

i am researching more about this coral as well,

thanks alot for the help mate, and hopefully the little fella does alright haha

The only thing is the tentacles on mine are not even an inch fully extended and those pictures of the torch coral are several inches long...
