    Hello,

I have decided to switch my power hog 250 20000K light out for some cooler, less power consuming leds. There has been a huge craze with cree led's and lots of kits using the leds. The problem is I dont want a bulky 48 led unit under my hood. I found these lights on ebay and the seller doesn't speak english so communication is terrible. Does anyone know if 5 or 6 of these lights are enough for a 40 gal breeder? Also, does anyone know if these are good leds?

    I wouldn't

There are many member's here at 3reef that could give better advice when it comes to LEDs than me. But i know enough to say i wouldn't for several reasons i have bought many things on ebay and have had problems only with sellers from China. Also the way they discribe the LEDs anyone selling aquarium lights know the colors we are looking for and the spectrum of their chips. And last you think communication is hard now wait till you don't get your order or you get it and it's very low quality. I know PayPal will cover but not worth it.
You can get what you want from DIYs sponcers here and they bend over backward to help.

    Good luck with your choice:)

Aside from the possible quality issues, you would have coverage issues with this type of led. The light is very concentrated and you'd end up with "spotlighting". People typically use more lower wattage LEDs for better coverage. On a 40g, you'd prob only need a 24 or 36 led kit to grow pretty much anything. You could go the crew route and it will pay for itself pretty quickly. No bulb replacements and lower wattage. There is also aquastyleonline.com which has become very popular using bridgelux LEDs.
