I feed every other day. 1 food type per feeding: Frozen white mysis, Omega One Super Color flakes, Spectrum Thera +A pellets (New Life), and DT's live phytoplankton. I had 2 firefish for 5 months ...healthy, happy, not shy and not picked on in any way. My LFS tells me the white mysis and Omega are filler rather than nutrition food. He says this could be a factor to the death of my firefish. All others are happy, healthy and friendly with one another. Im not satisfied with theSpectrum pellets, as they instantly sink to the substrate and the fish wont eat them from there ...I feed a few pellets at a time, but this causes my clown & shrimp to eat 95% of them. The others dont get much. I played with varying the amounts but it doesnt make a difference ...to the substrate, clown & shrimp. What high quality foods are best to alternate between? My apology for a long thread. Im trying to provide as much info as possible.

Im fairly new to this site. I know LFS and LR ...but what are many of the other abreviations? So many helpful people and threads here. Thanks in advance.

    ...Bobby

I don't have "a lot" of experience with foods, but I think the "variety is the spice of life" adage fits here. The best scenario is probably that feeding 5 different kinds of food is better than feeding 3 kinds of food. (providing it's not filler food, and it is food from which your livestock and fish can benefit, and metabolize).

I feed mysis and brine. I occasionally feed silversides that I chop very finely and mix with garlic. Also, when I buy fresh fish from a market (fish that I'm certain has never been frozen), I chop that finely and feed it too.

Thank you ReefSparky. Can I buy garlic in the grocery store and mince it ...or buy minced. Or is there a specific garlic that I should buy from the LFS?

Yes to the first question. I pulverize it with a knife blade. A trick I learned in school. When I'm done with it, it's thick, like mucous (sorry, but the description fits). I suppose you could also use a garlic press.

As for the LFS, I've never bought garlic from one. I can't see spending that kind of money for something that's so cheap at the grocery store.

I finally made my own food and added about 1/2 clove of fresh garlic to the blender with it. Everyone went crazy for it. I guess you could try that?

I did 2 large clams, cyclop-eeze, 1 large oyster, oyster eggs, 1/2 sheet green algae, 1/2 sheet red algae, broccoli, 1/2 clove garlic, 2 table shrimp, 1 tsp spirulina flake

I blended everything and froze it in bars similar to the size and shape that cyclop-eeze comes in. Everyone seems happy with it.

You can add many other things to homemade foods. The clams came live from the asian market, 2 LARGE for $1, everything else was cheap as well. I figure it was cheaper and more healthy than prepackaged :D

Got a lot of the ideas from folks here so ya have to thank them, I just followed suit :D

Wow that's a good price. I've got a killer recipe for New England chowder. Those prices would make for an inexpensive bowl of soup!! :)

Definitely!! These two clams had to be the size of large clementine tangerines. GREAT price but MAN OH MAN were they a pain to open!! Next time I might try dropping them into boiling water VERY quickly to break the seal.......who knows.
