I have had a red slime algae problem for my 24 gallon nano for about 2 weeks now and I tried taking care of it by using chemiclean red slime remover twice last week including two 20% water changes. I can see it growing back already do you guys have any advice? Should I turn off the lights for a couple of days? Thanks in advance.

    what are your water parameters?

chemi-clean only kills the existing stuff, but if there is enough food for it to grow back it will or another algae will.

I would cut back for now. I would siphon out as much as possible and do a 50% water change. then try the remover or a different brand again. also if possible turn off actinics

That sounds like a manageable plan...I can easily turn off the actinics...but does night leds count as well?

Respectfully; I disagree with a massive water change to "fix" a problem, unless in an extreme emergency. If one does not consider water displacement due to rock and substrate, a 50% change could become a 60+% change. This is, to say the least, excessive. Light has little effect on bacteria. jaredrthrbswimn,
After administering the medication did you allow a "full" 48 hours before the water change?

Yes I waited 2 days, did the water change while sucking up all of the algae, waited a day, re-did the chemiclean, and tomorrow is the 2nd day where i do a water change sucking up the algae again...

Is it cyanobacteria you're dealing with here? If so, light does have quite a large effect on it, and depending on what type of lighting you're using, bulb age can cause a problem. It could also be a nitrate problem, but the algae is using up the nitrate in the water causing you to get a false reading on your test kits. I'd siphon it out when you do your water changes and up the frequency of water changes slightly (rather than doing a 50% change, spread it out over a few days, that way you can also siphon off any more algae that has grown and any changes will be gradual). Other than that, if you've got a low flow in the tank or lots of dead spots, the algae will flourish here, so upping flow slightly might also be an idea. Although changing the flow alone isn't a solution to the original problem it will still help a bit.

Hi, Just joined this forum and noticed this thread. I had massive problems with Red slime which I tried all the above remedies without success. Finally I tried a product called MYCOSIDOL by Colombo Cerpofor. 100% success. red slime a thing of the past. it was gone in 48 hours. All you do is tip in the recommended amount from the capsules supplied. In my case, 130ltr tank....= 5 capsules. End of problem. Bought mine off Ebay...or look it up on Aquadistri.com. Give it a try....IT WORKS, with a 100% guarantee. !!

I wouldn't worry about the led's, too little wattage
every one has different takes on water changes but so I won't really get into it but light has everything to do with photosynthetic bacteria(hence photosynthetic name).
