So Today i just fired up my sump for the first time and all my fish are almost dying levels seem fine.

    Nitrites 0
    Nitrates >10

Could it be that my skimmer isn't on because i haven't plugged it back in yet

I don't think your skimmer not being plugged in fora day would have such a devastating effect on your fish.
    What are your other params?
    What size tank?
How old is the set up?
    What kind of live stock?
    Was the sump used?
    Did you clean it out?
    If so, with what?

So I just turned on the skimmer and put a pump with an airstone in the tank and they suddenly came to life.

Correct me if I'm wrong but one of the reasons I added the sump was to help airate the water
Sump is a 20g long open top

sounds like dissolved oxygen levels may be possible and the intro of the skimmer and air stone provided partial relief

adding the new fish and at same time removing the skimmer may be a double whammy here - extra demand and reduced load

aslo - new sump means new pump - any chance you have some stray voltage?

also whats in the sump was the salt water premixed and stood for 24 hours or longer
any cleaning agents used? might be a good idea to add some carbon to your filter system if you not already using it

Well I am using a mag 5 pump
And yes I mixed the water for the sump yesterday before using it today and had it airating the whole time it was in the bucket.
Im Pretty sure its an air problem due to the goby at the top of the water

OK get as much surface movement as you can air stones, skimmer, point power heads at surface etc

what temp you got - the higher the temp the lower the oxygen?
