Hermaphrodites

Now that i have your attention, I know all anthiases are hermaphrodites(able to change sex) normally the most dominant fish becomes a male and the rest stay female or risk being killed. I have a female Maldives Lyretail Anthias by itself does anyone with personal experience know if she will turn to a he or not? I like the color on the female but i guess if she did transform i could always get another female and have a pair but just wondering.

good possibility that she will turn. but also, keeping two anthias usually doesnt happen because the females will slowly die until there is only one left.
To keep a harem of anthias you usually need one male and 5+ females

 

definitely dont have a tank big enough for a harem but i have heard of people with success with only a pair and the guy at the lfs said he usually buys a pair at a time because usually people by them in a pair if available....i didnt like how the male looked, not as healthy as the female so i took her instead...still a cool fish but i would prefer the female lol

 

She will not turn if there's is no other anthias in there. Ours got the elongated dorsal spine after about year five... but that was the only change.
