No, shedding their exoskeleton doesn't necessarily coincide with needing a new shell. I would try to find some new ones for him anyway, though- it's always a good idea to have spares. When he drops his shell and runs around naked, that's when to worry.

It'll be fine. Go to Michael's or another craft store & see if you can find some shells.

Have u checked your LFS? Mine get boxes of empty shells from their supplier and give them out for free. Even let me choose what I want since not all of them are fitted for a new home.

Make sure to boil the shell in water before dropping it in the tank. My hermits do not get in the shells if I drop them without boiling.... weird, picky little hermits.

Molting means shedding the exoskeleton on their head, thorax, claws and legs. You may see it the tank. If he dropped the shell, yes he could be in trouble. I've never seen an lfs that doesn't carry empty hermit shells. Sometimes, though, that may be a sign of disease or stress rather than a need for a larger home.

That's not good. Do you have a fuge, sump, or QT where you can place him for protection and closer observation? If so, I'd recommend that, and boil his original shell and place it with him. It may have gotten something in it that he couldn't remove. I also still suggest you get a few extra shells pronto.
