I am looking at either the T5 or Halides to have the option to keep any coral types, but my question was on a 50 gal tank that is 24" wide I assume I need at least 200w and there aren't a lot of 24" T5's at that power, I assume maybe a clip on halide light fixture is best? I would rather not hang lights, and this will be an acrylic Truvu tank, I was unsure about how close the halides can be to the tank surface or is that not an issue? These things are expensive lol! Thanks!

A single MH would probably be the most convenient way to light a 24 inch hex tank
    IMO

what is the depth of the water?

height above water - generally the lamp is set between 8 - 12 inches above water surface
and in order to avoid light shock, many people start the lamps at 12 inches above water surface and lower them 1 inch per week over 4 weeks in order to arrive at the 8 inch level

The depth will actually be 24", I actually decided to go for a 24" cube to fit in my space. Would 250 Watts be the recommended power?
