I really love this site. I've been lurking on here for a little while in my quest to learn more about reef keeping and everything it involves. I decided last year that I wanted to start a marine tank and have been saving since. Early on in January I actually started my tank, a 90 gallon that is drilled.
I bought it from a guy on craigslist with a stand, an octopus nw200 skimmer, tons of plumbing parts, a 30 gallon Oceanic sump, a 20 gallon, a 30 gallon tall, a 250 watt heater and a mag5 for $250. I also bought about 200 lbs. of live sand that had been in a fully established tank for roughly 8 years and a 48" odyssea 260 watt PC light for $60 off another guy on craigslist.
My tank has been cycling for about a month. I have the display tank flowing into the sump and back up through the mag5. The skimmer is in the sump as well as the heater. I have turned the 20 into a fuge with with chaeto and water flows in and out of the refugium through two siphon tubes. I am slowly adding more and more live rock. I know that it will extend my cycling by adding more slowly, but I'm in no rush.
I'm planning on upgrading my lighting to T5's within the month and should be finished gathering all of the live rock I want as well.
I had a peppermint shrimp come in a piece of liverock from the lfs as well as six red leg hermits and one blue leg. I have tons of spaghetti worms and I've seen a few small bristle worms that hitchhiked in the sand. I also have this strange slug that hitchhiked that looks like it has little tentacle coming off its body in a few spots.
I hope to start with some softies in a few months and put some lps and a pair of false percs around June. A blenny is a must. I'd like to be able to have some sps at some point and maybe a clam. Also either a few banggai cardinals or a few purple chromis.
I was just letting you guys know where I'm at and saying hello. Any input or questions on my setup or anything are welcome. Also suggestions and advice as well. :)
I look forward to conversing here.
