I'm Shane, some of you may know me from other forums, some may not. I will be turning 19 and I have been in the hobby since August 2005 I believe. Although I haven't looked through-out the entire site, I do say that you all have a lot of options available to your members with customizations and such, and I haven't seen that on many of the boards I browse.

I am currently running a 20 Gallon Long Skimmerless reef in progress.

    The Tank History - hmmm

First started with a JBJ 12 Gallon Nano in Maryland. Got hair algae bad (but only on the glass?) and then the pump in the back went bad so I bought a 26 Gallon Bowfront. That did well - I had 130w PC lights - and get this (I was a definite newbie then) - My stock list then - yellow tang (somehow stayed quite healthy), Juvi Koran Angel (never bothered any coral or anemone I put in there), and a Clarkii Clown (meanest thing ever). Well then my dad lost his job and found his way to Ohio. I sold everything but the tank, rock, and lights, and started fresh. Well I got bored of the 26 (didn't like the height) so I sold that and bought the 20 Long. I found I like the open look better than the Rock Wall so I ended up selling much of my rock and keeping only a few select pieces.

Fastfoward - the tank as it sits today (still doing quite a few recommended no-no's in the hobby) - New T5 lighting upgrade, No Skimmer, HOB Magnum 250 Canister Filter - Cleaned Once a month(give or take), Maxi-Jet 900 and 600, Water changes every 6 months or so (yes months). I do top off with RO/DI water. And when water changes occur - I use Bio-Sea Salt

Stocklist - Clarkii Clown and 4 Stripe Damsel, 2 Brittle Stars, 3 Serpent Stars, 2 tube anemones, 3 or 4 Feather Dusters, Some Yellow Polyps, 2 very large hermit crabs (most would classify as not reef safe or possible fish eaters), 1 Very Large 2" or 3" Nassarious Snail, and a CoCo Tube Worm

The Tank is fed every 2-4 days depending, with 7 different dry foods, and frozen bloodworms and mysis.

So to all the newer reefers - please don't try and set up a tank like me, you probably won't have much success, and to the experienced - go ahead and hate but as they say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

And thanks for making such a great site

    p.s. Pics will come eventually

Im with you its not fun if you dont squeak some serious no no's in there. MY tank sounds a lot like yours no skimmer, water changes? um when I move the tank. Too many fish for my tank and still planning on adding a select couple. Seems to work for me though. Coral is growing and fish are dancing around at the glass for more food. Hopefully our luck holds now that we said this out in the open.

Welcome to the reef! There's definitely more than one way to reef, and if it works for you, who are we to judge? Now, of course, we might make fun of you behind your back...;)
