i have used an expensive bellaphos before

 

leave that a week and then replace with another 50%
after that 2 weeks, you can move up to suggested quantity and change it monthly or more or less that often?

is that to keep the chem ballence from swinging to fast and shocking stuff?

Yes it was
but as you have already been using Bellaphos, your levels should be low enough anyway and as such not cause the shock that can arise when using to much to quickly on a set up that has not previously been expossed to these types of PO4 reduction methods
