Hi all, I'm Siddique. I'm new here and new to saltwater aquaria. I've always been interested in starting up a marine tank but I never got the chance to because of school etc. But i did take up the annoying world of Discus lol. Now I work at a local pet store, where I'm more or less in charge of the entire fish section both fresh and saltwater. Since dealing with the saltwater, I'm now very interested in starting up a tank of my own. I already placed my order for my tank and filtration sysytem so maybe in one or two months I'll be receiving it and from there, I want to go with reef and around 6 to 10 clowns or tangs since my tank is only a 50 gallon. I need all the help I can get. I was refered to this site by someone on DAAH forums. I know I'd have fun here and I hope to meet some fellow reefers;)

Clowns, maybe, but Tangs, no no. Not only will they fight but will outgrow your tank. It's not spacious enough for 10 tangs. Hell, I've seen 180g tanks with less than 6 tangs and you want to cram 10 in a 50... whoa nelly!

Onto the clowns, you can have a lot of ocellaris or true percs as a school. Maroons or even tomato clowns would violently fight with each other if tossed in there with others. You have to look into the behavioral aspect before introducing lots of clowns.

I'm curious, why so many? Saltwater is very different than freshwater. In a freshwater community, you can cram lots of same species fish, but in a saltwater aquarium, it might have a negative impact. Read up! ;D

Also, if you're going reef, you wanna keep the bio-load to a minimum, so 10 fish would be outta the question. If you want a lot of fish in one tank, reef is not for you. FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) would better suit you. :tongue4:

    Good luck Siddique!

Yea i gave thought to the bio load and kinda guessed that ten fish would've been too much for my tank. However, I don't want to go totally reef... I would just like some anenomies, feather dusters and some live rock for now that is;D After I do enough reading etc, I'll decide for sure what I want to do. Wether it be fish only with some live rock or just fish only... But for now, I want everything I see at a shop and like. I know I have to stop that lol. Thanks for the help;)

welcome! Be careful as to how many fish you stock in a reef tank or fowlr for that matter. Stocking in terms of inch of fish per gallon of water is different than that of tropicals as well as africans. I would only add about 10 inches or so of fish to your tank. Less is better as far a water quality is concerned, unless your filtration is intense, ie. protein skimmer.
    good luck!

Well I'm gonna be running a wet dry filtration system since everyone at work told me that wet/dry is the best way to go. In the wet dry, I'm gonna put four different layers of filter media plus a protein skimmer so I gather that, that should be enough filtration and I'm also thinking about adding a Skilter 250 just to have that little extra bit of filtration. Is this a bad move to add on the Skilter?::)

    Siddique, welcome to 3Reef!
I don't have a Skilter, but from what I've read, they're on the lower end of the long list of protein skimmers. Read up (here in 3Reef, of course), and then see what your pocketbook can handle. But, you should get a skimmer of some kind.
