hi all i have a 100 gallon reef and im thinking of introducing a new tang, maybe a powder blue or naso/lipstick but..!!

i already have a mimic tang and a sailfin that have been established around 8 months, so i'm pretty sure war will break out, so my theory is to remove the two tangs that are already established and put them in to my smaller (70 gal) bow fronted tank for a week or so and have a small move around (live rock etc) in my main and introduce the 3 tangs together in to the main tank, would this be the correct and best way to do it...??

    thanx adrian.

PB and nasos need more than 100 gallon tanks IMO. sailfin and mimics may not need as much space but a 70 gallon is to small.

naso tangs and sailfins are peaceful not sure about mimics. PB tangs are aggressive.

they used to be in this tank, this the reason i set up the new reef tank but still have the old one running i use it more as a QT tank these days, the sailfin and mimic would only be in there for a week to stop them being dominant in the 100 reef tank, they will then be returned together to the 100gal along with the new addition.

I think the powder blue may cause some trouble, the mimic and naso I believe wont be a problem as they are more on the peaceful side, but your idea of taking the pb out and then reintroducing him where the other tangs have been living may lead to him not being as aggressive but its still a risk imo.

I think you're maxed out on tangs for your tank size. The only tang I can think of that would work in your system is a Kole yellow eye or Bristletooth tang. The others get way too big and need a large amount of swimming space to remain happy and healthy.

I think you are maxed out on tangs. The PB needs a larger tank than you have to be happy and may become a monster in your current tank.

I have a Sailfin, Naso Blonde, Powder Blue, Yellow & Tomini in my 150 Gallon. Everyone is happy. All my tangs are 5 inches and less. Tangs take years to get big while in captivity. As long as you plan on upgrading to a bigger tank in 2.5 to 3 years(Like I Will)...I say get the tang. My PB Tang would pick a fight with new additions, but it would only last a day or two.
My PB was the 3rd tang added to my tank so I just made sure that the Yellow & the Naso that followed were just as big so that they could defend themselves. Size of new additions can play a big role when a PB is in the equation. I wouldnt rehome the current tangs if I were you. You dont want to stress them out. Especially the PB Tang!! They are ich magnets. When I added a new fish...I increased my feedings a little bit (to keep agression down)& kept two big bottles of "Ich Attack" on stand by. It never came to ich, but I was ready. Good luck & try not to overstock your tank to much because increased water changes can be harsh on your corals :)
