Greetings fellow enthusiasts!

I have kept freshwater tanks for the last several years and have finally started my first saltwater tank, a 46 gallon bow front that will eventually be a reef aquarium. I have cycled the tank and have finally added its first inhabitants over the last couple of weeks; a purple firefish, a yellow watchman goby, two snails, 3 small hermit crabs, a halloween hermit crab and a tiger pistol shrip. I am still deciding on last three fish I want to add. I think my next add will be a bangii cardinal, followed by a clown fish, and then a flame angel (I am little worried about the flame, I have heard conflicting info). Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I am finding this to be an exciting and interesting hobby and look forward to learning a lot from this site.

hey man welcome to 3reef! You should use caution with the flame angel for sure... You should also look into a Clean Up Crew as well... I made the mistake of not having one in my first tank... huge mistake... I recommend www.reefcleaners.com the owner Jon is also a member of the forum. He has the best prices anywhere. What kind of light are you using? and Filteration? How much live rock do you have in there?

Thanks for the advice and recommendation on the clean up crew. I currently have 2 snails, 4 hermit crabs, and a pistol shrimp. What else and how many do you recommend for a 46 gallon tank?

Here is my system:
Lighting: 36" T5HO System 39W X 4 (156W)
Eshopps PSK 100H - hang on the back protein skimmer
Marineland Penguin 200 Biowheel hand on the back filter (would like to upgrade to a sump system soon)
2 powerheads - 1@750gph and 1@425gpm

I have about 80lbs of live rock with aragonite sand as substrate.

Again, any suggestions or thoughts are welcome!

 

Like mentioned earlier, John at reef cleaners is awesome. You can order one of his quick crews which is an assortment of snails and hermits if you like in amount proportionate to your tank.

He also does custom crews where you tell him about your tank, inhabitants, algae, and various other info and recommends a crew for you.

I did a custom crew and love it. I received way more than I ordered and my tank has been looking pristine ever since.

With the Flame Angel, they are hit or miss. Some people have had them nip at their corals, and others haven't. It's all anecdotal. I have a cherub angel in my tank and added corals after he was already in the tank and have not had an issue with him thus far. Seems like it's just a roll of the dice, and some Dwarf Angels are worse than others.
