hey guys whats up! im new around here, very interested in reef's currently have a 55 gallon with LR, anenomes and clowns with a tang. Im stationed in italy, and i cant wait to get back and start setting up a DIY fuge, with a new skimmer i just ordered. Hopefully will knock out the CRAPPY hang on back one i had before. But anyways yea cant wait to get back and tackle the Red Algea problem i got, ive soaked up alot of info that will surely help me out. Ive been reading around in the forum for the last two days (i get lost alot in em) but hopefully in around 3 weeks ill be back in italy and finished with this deployment. I do have one question so far i havnt stumbled upon an answer yet...

    1) ive done the number crunchin' and my tank will be turning over about 14-15 times an hour. Is that to fast for a refugium? (giving the time it needs to produce enough good algae?) also is having a skimmer in the first chamber a bad idea? its an ES-C52 in sump. Im planning on installing baffles to knock out bubbles.

very excited to read your replies and lookin forward to getting to know all of you down the road.

    WELCOME TO 3REEF!!!

I would run both skimmers for a while to help reduce organics. There is nothing at all wrong with a skimmer being in the first chamber provided you make it only big enough to house the skimmer. If the chamber is too big, the proteins will have too much time to rise to the surface of the water and won't get sucked up by the pump.

I've never understood the reasoning behind having refugiums slow. Chaetomorphia actually grows best when it's tumbling.

thanks for the input wall, yea the hang on back skimmer was a prizm, it hardly seems like it works, and not just that but it is pretty touchy, i wish i found more info before the purchase, lol even the sales rep told me "id go with the delux, you should skimp on the skimmer" now i realize why. hehe.
