its sounding like cyano. but just a guess with no pics. is it mainly in a "dead zone" ? not enough flow going over that area?

pics would be awesome and as divott said make sure you have adequate flow as to restrict the growth of algae. have you looked into creating a fuge with some macro? i know you have mangroves but some chaeto would be in good order

I have the same thing! Only little areas of it though, nothing major. I've had cyano also, and this doesn't look the same.

where are you getting your water for water changes? Are you useing ro/di? if so what are your TDS at?How many pieces of filter sponge or foam is in your sump or tank overflow? They can trap waste and create nitrates and fuel algae.Make sure you have lots of flow in the show tank area so there are no dead spots.

Yep, that's what I have. Uh-oh, could be bad! Wonder if John Wilson's is the same.

mr wilson's could be the same but there are many varieties of turf algae

and yeah it could get bad but will need the bad nutrients to feed off and spread.

success stories have been done with manual removal and improvements of water quality as well as the addition of tangs or algae blennies like a lawnmower blenny

A water change will lower your nitrates, how often do you feed? you should also look into a good CUC if you don't already have one.
