hi everyone

First time on here....
have a few questions that Im hoping someone can answer.
First off I have a 40 gallon saltwater aquarium
I wanted to know if anyone has had a problem with the mix of fish I was planning on putting in it.
2 Hi Fin Goby
1 Firefish
2 Mandarin Dragonets (mated of course)
3 Yellow Assessor Basslets
one clam of some kind (high in the tank, and any info is greatly appriciated)

Your Dragonettes, I think you should wait on as they are specialized feeders and in a small tank like that as well as just being set-up, they will starve, I'm afraid!
Basslets are fairy aggressive and territiorial in nature, so they may pose a problem to the less boisterous tank mates like the Firefish! Watch out for jumping out of your tank also-good jumpers!
The clam, I don't know what kind to offer you any info! Maybe you can atleast let me know what kind of clam!!

I was hoping that I could get imput on that one.
I did read a book about those types of fish and I remember that the Yellow Assessors
"is a peaceful fish... proper assemblage would include 3 small individuals and one larger specimen... the smaller size makes it more vulnerable"
As for the clam ( yes I have a book on these too...lol)
I was thinking Tridacna crocea. The guy that works at the fish store said it would work fine in my tank. Unfortunately I know that he was also looking to sell me stuff, I'm not quite sure hes looking out for the best intrest of the clam!

What kind of lighting do you have to support a Tridacna Crocea?

 

Right now just a regular coralife, but I have a metal halide on order. 150w for 40 gallons should be more than enough right?

Actually where I should be starting is what I have:
40 Gallon acryic tank
36in fluorescent light set up (4 blubs and some lunar lights)
canister filter, bak-pak protein skimmer, etc etc etc
live rock and sand that has been cycling for about a month now
I have ordered some copepods off of ebay for the mandarin (hes not in the tank for atleast another 2 months, just thought I would start putting food in there)
and I ordered the 150w metal halide for the clam

For many corals and some clams...yes you should be fine.
Oh, before I forget, I read info about the Assessor Basslets...just becareful if you have more than one male or aggresive behavior will result.
As for your clam, if it is a Crocea or Maxima, they are the two most demanding and hardest of the clams to keep. They should be positioned in your rock work and left there to help ensure there survival.
Why not start off with one of the easier clams to get your feet wet, so to speak!?
Squamosa, Derasa, Hippopus are better suited for novice aquarists!

 

Would any of them get to big for a 40 gal set up?
I would hate to get attached to it then end up having to get rid of it because it got way to big for the tank....
