Hey everyone. Name's Patrick, I was given a baby tiger oscar a year ago in a 10gal aquarium along with one of those little sucker fishes (plecto..something rather). I was supposed to only watch them for a few months over summer until the owner returned...

Well, 8 months later he never came and got them. I bought them a larger tank that was on clearance (and am regretting it now, it's an odd shape tank ..hard to find a stand). I put the fish in the larger tank and now a year later they've grown and grown. They sorta became a part of my house, and here I am now (year later) buying ANOTHER tank and getting more fish (parrot chiclids and another plecto-guy).

Now, I'm a fish freak. These little suckers amaze me. The first plecto-fish I got has grown to about 10" and plays with bottle caps in the fishtank now, the oscar has grown to like 11-12" and gobbles 5 goldfish at a time...the little parrot chiclids (male and female I believe) dig giant gaping holes in the gravel at the bottom of the tank by moving the rocks one by one with their mouths... It takes them months but they always reach the glass floor. LOL
    Crazy lil fish....

I signed up here to try and get some help with a fish tank stand for my irregular shaped tank. Hopefully somebody knows of something, I'm trying to avoid building my own but probably will..

While I was searching the internet for help with the stand, I found some cool things you might like (if your a fish geek..)

is LR short for Live Rock?

I dunno, I never understood the "entertainment" or reasoning behind the purchase of live rock. I understand there is a lot of prep work making sure water is pristine and having accurate full spectrum UV lighting, all for a small gain (unless live rock does something cool?) I don't really know..

I thought about setting up a saltwater tank in my 55gal rectangle because the fish are so much cooler, but freshwater is easy and the fish I have like it..

don't fvck with what works, right?

If you would jump the fence to saltwater, you will never regret it. I done freshwater (brackish) for 23 yrs before taking the dive in saltwater and I wish I would of done it years ago. I have always had a tank since I was 15 yrs of age and nothing has been more enjoyable then having a Marine tank.
Welcome to 3reef, hope you decide to jump the fence someday because you will never look back....8)

IMO a Saltwater tank has more options you can do to it and more fish/inverts/corals to put in it, than a fresh water. I've had freshwater and won't go back. Yes, it is more time consuming and more expensive, but the benefits outweigh the costs.... Welcome to 3reef!!!

Maybe when I grow old of the tiger oscar and the two parrot chiclids I'll jump the fence to the salt water side... For now, they still need a home. :(

    HA! I hate cats.

And I have my hands full with two lab puppies as it is. The older puppy stares down the oscar everytime...
