Hi everyone, my name is ksuyen. New here, and new at saltwater tank. I kept freshwater (discus) for years but this time I am going to take a year project for saltwater tank, hopefully it's not more harder than keeping discus, but offer more exciting experiences.

I got a blog to record stuffs (trying to keep it going): Little Ocean Rift (ocean rift? what the heck is that? never mind, it just pops out in my mind)

Some pictures of my new setup: [IMG]

At the moment I am still cycling. And I plan to do it for at least four months. So four months without fish, coral, and exciting stuffs - I gotta be bored ><" At least I can watch things growing on my rocks.

There's one more thing I want to say, I am not a native english speaker, so pls forgive my grammar and spellings.

Could be algae or coral. A description would help as well as a closer shot.

Welcome to 3reef and reef keeping!!! Just browse around here and read through all the stickies, lots of great info in those. As things pop into your head type keywords into the search to find related post and read as many as you can! I am not sure how complicated your discus tank was but your reef tank can be as simple or complicated as you choose. You can build an SPS low nutrient system dominated by demanding acros that will require constant monitoring and dosing, or a tank full of softies that prefer the water less than pristine and dont need much outside of regular water changes, or anything in between! Biggest change from FW to SW is making the water for WC and matching your salinity.

As for what is on the rock hard to tell prob algae of some sort. Why nothing for 4 months!!! Waiting is the way to go but you can add slowly once the cycle is over, usually 4 weeks or so. Adding some easier to keep corals early one is ok to do as well since they will not make much waste for the tank the break down

Welcome to 3reef! What are your tank & system specs (size, filtration, lighting, etc) and what are your plans?

And I agree, 4 months is a very long time to wait! Waiting between 1-2 months is reasonable though. Are you testing ammonia, nitrite, & nitrate to follow the tank cycle?

About the unindentified object above, it's very tiny, white and kind of spirally, might be a dead worm skeleton? I also found Bristle Worm (see second pic above) - pretty huge. It disappear inside the rock now (to one of the many holes).

Do you think I can speed up the cycling process with a few raw shrimps throw in? I am at work, but I will check water parameters later. The rock just in yesterday so I won't expect much Ammonia yet.

I have Blenny Aquamedic. Love it so far. Dimensions: (l x w x h) 16 x 20 x 16 in. Volume approx. 21 gal. It includes Turboflotor 500 for skimmer and NanoProp 5K for blower. The 3 aquaspotlight (3x3W, 14.000K) is sufficient for me now, might or might not upgrade in the future. The only thing I regret was buying hydrometer from Redsea. Might as well get refractometer from eBay.

I will take more photo tonight.

Marshall I am planning for semi reef tank, mainly soft coral and reef safe habitats inc. small fishes and invertebrate.

Sounds like you are well on your way to a great tank! And you certainly could throw in a dead shrimp to help the cycle. It will also give the live rock inhabitants something to eat :)
