Hi everyone, I've been in the fishkeeping hobby for a little over 2 years now, I've been doing freshwater all of this time. I feel it's time to give saltwater a chance, I hope joining this forum was the right decision and really hope to see all of your guys input and advice on my first reef tank :p. I am a complete noob so please bare with me lol. I'm starting up a standard 55 gallon as my first SW tank, it would be mostly likely be running on a eshopps sump with an overflow box. I still have no idea what skimmer to get or what lights/light fixture to buy, I'm also debating whether to buy a RO/DI system right of the bat or wait. Just hoping you guys would drive me towards the right direction on what steps I should or shouldn't take first.8)

Welcome to 3reef! Many will tell you that investing in an RO/DI unit is well worth it even at the start. Lighting, so many options.....Metal halide, T5HO, or the newest that many are opting for are LED's. Welcome to a very fun hobby!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, I very much appreciate it. But anyway back to buisness after doing some research, I found out that my Eshopps wet/dry with bio balls isn't gonna do me any good using it for a reef, I have a Eshopss WD-100CS does anyone have any experinces using these sumps on their tanks? If so what in sump skimmer could i possibly fit inside the sump.

Can you fit a skimmer in the section that had the bioballs? If so, what is the size of that compartment? How high is the baffle between that section and the return section?

Currently not home right now so I can't measure it but this is the filter.
    Eshopps Wet-Dry Filters

And these are the dimensions on the site thats sell them. 11-1/2" W x 9" L.
Those dimensions are for where the return pump would go.

The problem is you don't really want a skimmer in the return section as the water level will fluctuate with evaporation. You want it in the inlet or another section of the sump where the water level will never change. That is why I was asking about the inlet section where the bio-balls were.
