howdy everyone, hey I just wanted to post some results I am having with LED's. Nothing scientific, but simply observation.

I have a 29 gallon that has lots of corals in it, but of note is my 8 inch Deressa clam.

Now we all know how sensitive the clam critters can be to light- so....

I decided to test my 3 AAA batt. powered LED flashlights against my 150 HQI that is at 14k.

A single 3watt LED flash light had more direct penetration (brighter- but less dispersion- it's a flash light) and the clam saw this right off- even with the MH running- add another flash light- saw it again- add all three (9watts effective) I have never seen him open (after 15mins of LED) like he did- I swear his mantel was gonna pop right off of him. He does great under the 150 HQI- but man- what a difference.

Now mind you I have no test gear, nothing sicentific to mesure with, but a single 3 watt was a lot of light- color wise- brighter then the halide (to my eyes) but no heat.

I will be doing more work with this over the winter. Any LED folks out there?

I am running LED's on a 30 gallon cube. When the cube was cycling I spotted the two LEDS's on my 120 DT which has only a single 250 Halide for the whole tank (underlit i know) with the two spotlighting LEDs (60 degree optics) I absolutely saw additional polyp extension of my Frogspawn within hours of adding the LEDs. When it's spotlighting such as it was out of your flashlights I can easily see the effect being more dramatic.

It's like they finally think they are actually back in the Ocean!

I've got the 160w maxspect and I really like them. If they truly give 50,000 hours of life then they are worth every penny. Even half that is worth it really. MH bulbs are expensive and the price adds up quick. I like the look of those new BoostLED units that look similar to mine but they weren't around when i got mine earlier this year.

Sounds really interesting but I would like to point out that its a well known fact that when clams over extend like that it is a sign that they are not getting enough light. Whether or not this is the case I cannot say but it is something to think about.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Most definitely. Clams typically do this when attempting to get as much surface area exposed to the available light, not necessarily a good sign.
