    hi to all;D

We started with a orca tank and have just recently been able to forfull a dream and purchase a 621ltr tank off ebay for £450 :D. We had to collect it and were unable to transport any original tank water :(. Our local marine shop managed to supply only 50% ro water and so had to top up with 50% tap water and use stress coat. Our new main tank came with corals; fish and living rock; sump protien skimmer and uv. We have had it up and running for 1week now and although all test are good ie ( ph;nitrite;nitrate;ammonia;calcium;kh;iodine) we are experiancing a browning on the living rocks? Is this due to us not being able to take the tank water or having added tapwater or is this a stage due to the new unmatured water we had to use:(

pls advise we would much appreciate your views

    welcome to 3 reef Jarvo

IMO the use of the tap water and silicates in the tap water has given you a Diatom bloom

Diatoms use silicates to construct themselves - once all the silicates have been used up, they will recede

what corals have you got in there, some corals like GSP (Green Star Polyps) can close down to excess of Diatoms as the exit holes get blocked - so if this does occur a light jet of water using a turkey baster or small power head to clear the diatoms of any corals that are affected

get some photos up in the show of your fish tank section as we will appreciate that

    Hello and welcome to 3reef

I think steve hit it on the head with it being a Diatom bloom from the tap water.
