Hi and welcome Sam!! The newbie forum here is great. Going slow and doing a lot of research is key. I am new also and search these forums before I do things so I don't make as many mistakes as I'm sure I would otherwise!! Happy reefing:)

    welcome to 3 reef
where to start - check through as many threads as possible on this site using the search facility and type in FOWLR - you will find loads of posts related to these systems

but basically you will need for definite

tank - buy big, save at least 1 upgrade - we all upgrade eventually

    stand or cabinet

Light fixture - Suggest T5s and as many as budget can afford as FOWLR -often progresses to "I want to add some coral, what can I keep?"

heater - 2 smaller ones are better than 1 big one

Filter - gets complicated here many different methods are used - sump fuge, cannister, etc - a lot depends on size of tank and what fish you want - large tank, large messy eaters = more filtration required.

Water pumps - circulation and filtration

Rock - live gives you nice appearance quickly - but base rock is cheaper and just as effective over a period of time

substrate - or bare bottom (easy to clean in a FOWLR with messy eaters)

    Saltmix

RO or better yet RO DI water

    (Looks over his shoulder)

optional - but almost certainly better if you do

Skimmer - as good a quality as budget allows - and oversized is better than under sized IMO

I have missed loads to be sure, so read, read and read

Hey Samboy - 3ft is a good size to start with so your on the right lines

Id be happy to reply to your specific - but to keep the Mods happy, and to make sure you get better replies than I can give can you re post the question in the New to the hobby forum

the number of people on this site that have fantastic experience will amaze you
so its always good to open a new question on the correct forum otherwise many of these people would miss it , hidden in the say hello section

Post the question, and I will definitely tell you what I would do if it where mine, but then we will both get the benefit of even better replies (There will be some)

    Steve
