What is the difference between HID and HQI M/H's? Also, If I buy a MH/T5 combo (like MarineLand or AquaticLife) is a "chiller" always necessary or can I get away without one? Cold winters here, and in summer A/C works really well where my tank is.

You probably can get away with AC.

HID is high intensity discharge (metal halide)

    HQI is Halogen Quartz Iodide

HID is a single ended bulb that screws into a socket and HQI is a double ended bulb that clips in place.

My tank is 120g with 40g breeder sump. It only has a 1 bulb standard flourescent hood with glass covers.

Distance of the fixture makes a huge difference, especially with metal halide. If you switch to MH and have significant temperature swings try replacing the lid with a mesh or screen lid. Adjust the height of the fixture or place fans.

Can't wait to get the lighting cuz I can't start getting corals without it. I know I have to be patient but it's a little frustrating to go the the LFS an see the beautiful frag tanks!! And I'm sick of bein' "PLANKTON" with no karma!! lol Sorry, just venting...

Yes it is frustrating, but the patience pays off in the long run. The fixture will make all the difference and allow you to keep a wider range of cool corals. K+ :)

hqi's are suppossed to be alittle brighter then standard mh(single ended) bulbs...i use 2 250w hqi bulbs and i love em...they get crazy hot so just make sure you use proper fans and or ventilation for sure!!
