my new tank is running fairly high on temperature about 80 degrees midday. I plan on getting a chiller in a month or so, but im wondering if i need to make taht a more urgent purchase, or if im ok with 80 degrees peak temp, (low at night according to controller is 75ish.

I added a small fan blowing across sump to see if that helps a bit.

80-82 is fine but above 84 thats when you should act.

You don't really want to go over 82F for too long. I keep my tank as close to 80F as possible

Installing a clip on fan over the sump usually lower the temps 3-5 degrees easily. Is it blowing across the length of the sump for best cooling?
Are your MH lights in a canopyand is it vented or have cooling fans? My canopy is completely enclosed on all sides and top but I have a single 120mm fan in each end, both blowing in across the length of the tank with exit holes in the roof of the canopy above the reflectors so heat rises out but light does not hit the ceiling.
I'm in Phoenix and the tank stays 79-91 year round with no chiller, I sold it a year ago since it never ran anymore.

the difference between here and phoenix is you have AC in your house(or your one crazy dude). here we rarely see even 90, but last year we actually had two 105+ days, and i was floating frozen 2Liter bottles and pumping water through a tube in a ice chest. I'd like to avoid that this year.

My air conditioner is on a setback digital thermostat so is off or set way high all day while we are at work. My house sees 80+ most days before the air comes back on in the evening. Fans are awesome additions.
Floating frozen bottles is not very effective when you look at the cooling they provide. I can't quote the laws of thermodynamics but there are those on here who can. Fans are much more efficient but be prepared for the evaporation rate to go up.
