Hi there everyone. I was wondering if hitch hiker crabs are likely to be able to survive a low salinity treatment of about 1.010 for 4 weeks? I have been putting my hitch hiker crabs in my QT because they were eating my coral and I don't have a sump. I have 3 crabs in there, one MIGHT be a teddy bear, the other two I have no idea. But now I need my QT to treat my fish for ich. I will be using low slalinity as that seems to be the least stressful for the fish. I don't have any place to move my hitch hikers except back into my DT where they will eat my (expensive) corals and may not be able to catch them again. Any suggestions? is there some sort of containment system I could put them in for about 2 months? That way I could just pull the containment system back out and put them back in the QT when I'm done using it. My DT is a 29 gallon biocube, QT is a standard 20 gallon tank with a hang on filtration system (it cycled months ago). What ever I use needs to be CHEAP as I now have medical bills and can't invest a lot of money in this.

Go get a small plastic critter cage and lower them into the DT. I hope you know what im talking about. They use it to keep crickets or other small things in temporarily.

That is a good idea from DevinH IMO

alternatively , the covered live bearer traps, that freshwater hobbyists would put expectant female guppies or platties in

in the LFS around these parts, they keep small Mantis, also some shrimp species etc
in plastic tubs with screw fit lids and a series of holes drilled in them
they locate these in the main tanks from where they sell them, and it means they can be kept in the same tanks as the things that would eat them and also the things they would normally eat

Or don't pull your fish and cause more stress on them, hence causing more ich problems. If you aren't going to leave your fish in the QT for 8 weeks so the ich dies off in the DT, it seems pointless, unless they are eating and struggling. If you're fish are still eating, just remove stress levels, feed good foods loaded with selcon and garlic and hope.

read this but most importantly the "simple rules to avoid ich" by vinny
