    TRICK: use the flash, but place your finger over half of it. If it comes out too bright, cover more of the flash. If it's too dark, cover less of it. You'll hit some spot where it's lit, the shutter speed is fast, and it doesn't look overexposed. Been there, done that on small snails :)
