Im curious if any one on here has ever used a plane old hang on back filter as a bio filter. instead of of using the appropriate carbon filter pads, replace them with a bag of ceramic rings or some other bio media. there are already divider walls in the bottom to separate the filter chamber from the intake, would this be enough to add some LS in the filter area and throw some media on top.

I am currently running a hob on my 29 gal, rated for 40-60 gal.
I also have a whisper hob for a 30 gal just sitting there. (hence my reasoning)
This all seemed like a reasonably good idea to me so If this is all just stupid let me know lol.

Nothing wrong with that thought. Is it a reef tank?

Yeah sorta. I was gonna start with just a fish only and then gradually work towards some coral with time but the most recent addition of live rock had a few Zoa polyps sprout out of it :). It forced me into reef mod earlier than expected. thanks for the input.

Just be sure to keep the hob filter clean so they dont become nitrate producers!

Also, I am having trouble raising my ph, could that be from the carbon in the HOB filter system. Im using Kent's Super Buffer dkh, and kent's liquid calcium.

to the best of my knowledge, the carbon shouldn't have effect ph..?? If carbon is old, it can leach out phosphates but I don't think it would mess with the ph. I would change your carbon once a month.

Again, this is just my opinion that has been shaped by my own trials over the years...
