Yesterday I noticed that my HOB filter at my office had shut off for some unexplainable reason, I decided to leave it be and mess with it later. So I get to work today to find that the entire tank has been overrun by hair/slime algae, everything in the tank is just covered by it . What I am wondering is, what could be the reason for this algae out break, is it really just the filter?? Also is there any reason a perfectly running filter would just conk out all of a sudden?

P.S. The majority of fish ( besides the royal gramma ) seem unfazed by it. My yellow tang and cleaner shrimp are hard at work to eradicate this horrible algae.

I highly doubt that your filter breaking down would cause such an outbreak. What are your nitrate/phosphate levels in your tank? It could be that your tank just kinda gave out biologically, if that makes sense:confused: Did you take apart your filter? there could be something jamming the impeller or it could have corroded inside. Good Luck :)

sounds to me like a small clownfish probably jammed a pebble in it
