HOB filter dead + algae outbreak

Yesterday I noticed that my HOB filter at my office had shut off for some unexplainable reason, I decided to leave it be and mess with it later. So I get to work today to find that the entire tank has been overrun by hair/slime algae, everything in the tank is just covered by it . What I am wondering is, what could be the reason for this algae out break, is it really just the filter?? Also is there any reason a perfectly running filter would just conk out all of a sudden?

P.S. The majority of fish ( besides the royal gramma ) seem unfazed by it. My yellow tang and cleaner shrimp are hard at work to eradicate this horrible algae.

 

I highly doubt that your filter breaking down would cause such an outbreak. What are your nitrate/phosphate levels in your tank? It could be that your tank just kinda gave out biologically, if that makes sense Did you take apart your filter? there could be something jamming the impeller or it could have corroded inside.
