For sometime I have been thinking about this idea. I love tinkering like my grandfather (inventor of the sequential Blasting Machine and Method), so this is not a hard thing to build if the idea works. I want to make an overflow by drilling out a hole in the bottom of the filter and attach pvc pipe running to the sump. I am just tossing around ideas, so please feel free to input any ideas. If you don't think this is going to work also let me know.

I've thought about doing this too. Just worries me with power outages.

funny you mention that, because i was going to do the same thing. and in the case of power outage i think itll be fine. only because the pump in there will shut off and so will the sump pump. so basically itll be at a stand still untill it goes back on. Im going to be doing this exact thing in the future when i get my taxes back.

O nice! Post Pictures. The only problem I could see is if one of the pumps stopped working for some reason, like a bit of sand in the there. That could be a a big problem.

How exactly are you going to match what is getting pumped out to what's getting pumped back in. Sounds like a flood waiting to happen imo.

Well heres what i was going to do. I was going to cut plastic suction tube down till its right at the surface this way, if the sump pump quits itll only suck out minimal water compared to being 4-5 inches down. I don't see sand getting up to the top of the water, but if it does just clean it like you regularly would.

An overflow works by draining the water out of tank that is pumped into the tank by the return pump ie ReturnIn = OverflowOut.

You will find matching the flow rates of the filter pump and return pumps "impossible", ie ReturnIn !=(not equal) OverflowOut. You will either overflow your sump or overflow your tank depending on which pump has more flow.

By a gate valve on the return. to tune it down. itll take some time and def monitoring to get it just right. Also i know the model of my HOB filter is rated for 150 gph so just like you would with an overflow of any sort, match it as close as possible.

....then the filter pump runs dry and burns up...
