I have a Standard HOB Aqueon 30 on my 20 Gallon long. I have seen some Videos / Pictures where people stuff different items in there to help Water quality etc. I currently have the standard filter along with a small sock with a 3 spoon fulls of Activated Charcoal. Any tips/Ideas etc

    Thank you

Good question - I have an Aqua C Remora HOB and was wondering if i can add some charcoal into it somewhere.

If so, i just want to be sure i place it in the right chamber :)

Let's see what the pros say!

as long as it's getting slow to moderate flow it doesn't really matter.

Sometimes I keep it in my skimmer and sometimes I keep it in an HOB filter (that has no filters in it actually).

how much rock have you got in this 20 long reef?
how much water movement have you got
are you running a skimmer, if so what type?

depending on the answers to the above questions - then chemical media like carbon of purigen or chemi pure or GFO ( if you dont have sump/ reactor combo)

basically if you have enough rock, enouch water movement and a good skimmer then you dont need any biological capabilities in a HOB or cannister filter for that matter
so using them as a means for housing and running chemical media is ideal IME

Thank you very much for your reply Steve. I have about 20 pounds of live rock, 20-30 pounds of live sand i plan on getting more live rock in time. I do have a Skimmer you can see a Video here of my set up www.youtube.com/joshuacaudillo the skimmer is a Tunze 9002 nano skimmer rated to 52 gallons and a Koralia pump number 2 which pumps 600gph the HOB Filter alone is 200gph so totally turning 800gph within the tank alone not including the Skimmer if there is even a ghp turn over on it.
