    Hi everyone.

    So... little challenge.

My tank has been up for one year. It's a 29 gallon, FOWLR. Everything is going great, except for a little aglae issue, which I'm sure through the use of a new CUC (right now it consists of one blue hermit :p) and a good sump + fuge set up, I can get rid of.

Take a look at this vid of my tank to get a basic idea. My mangroves are growing well and all my fish are healthy. But I'm ready to get my water in the right zone for some soft corals and an anemone.

    YouTube - tank.

I'm going to be building a sump, and a fuge, and have one question:

Do I need to get rid of my currently operating AquaC Remora HOB skimmer? It seems to work really well, but obviously I could be getting a lot more done with a better skimmer in my future sump.

It seems kinda pointless to build a sump and fuge, without upgrading my skimmer to something a little more.... intimidating looking ;)

As I said, my tank is 29 gallons. I'm planning on putting in a 15ish gallon sump that includes a pretty big fuge full of mangroves and other macro algaes in order to starve the algae in my tank. I also will put in a phosban reactor somewhere, but my main concern at this time is the skimmer.

Has anyone come up with a solid answer... what is the BEST skimmer for me to buy, in the 200 dollar range?

I feel like I just totally changed my question. I guess I know the answer to the first one. lol.

    Thanks in advance!

I personally have a aqua c and they work amazing for a 29 I wouldn't spend the money and get a in sump skimmer. take the aqua c that you have extend the tubing running from the pump and set it in your sump. A aqua c in a 29 is more than enough skimming. Take that 200 dollars and spend it on something else you could use in the hobby. But thats just my 2 sense. Happy Reefing

I currently have a Aqua c remora in my 30 breeder with a 29 gallon sump and love it. I agree save the money and buy something else with it, you will be fine with it. And anyways you are not going to get anything thats even close to intimidating in a 15 gallon sump, LOL.

Agree. I like the idea of using a HOB skimmer in a sump because it gives you some extra room. Room for baffles, the fuge, your return section. When I redo my sump in the future, I'm going to make it bigger and probably get a skimmer that I can use as a HOB to give me more room for baffles and fuge.

Another advantage to putting the AquaC in the sump is that you can overdrive it with a bigger pump. A pump in the 600gph range works well for the non-Pro model. If the splashing water is too noisy, you can use a sock or other cloth to let the water cascade down (works like a charm).
