It may even be 8 inches. It's huge.

It's in a 120g 4 foot tank, the hippo tang that is around the same size is more of an issue, buit both would probably better off in a bigger , longer tank.

Yeah, I would never plan on having one in a 55g for it's entire life. When they are small, sure, put one is a 20g, but they get big because they eat like pigs.

Hm, I guess I'm not gonna get a Hoeven's then. I don't like the idea of getting a fish then having to get rid of it down the line because of such a foreseeable issue..

Any other similar wrasses that would be reef safe and not outgrow what is basically a 55G display?

Pretty much any fairy or flasher. Most of those are 3", some can get to 5". I have 6 wrasse's in my tank, 5 different species (5' 125g tank).

+1 for the 3" adult size fairy and flasher wrasses, most are great for a 55g.

Make that a +2 for me.

Unless you have or want to control a flat worm issue, or have clams, then a fairy wrasse would be a good addition.

Halichoeres wrasses will take car of FW's and pyramellid snails, which will kill tridacna clams. Fairy wrasses, nor lined wrasses like a 6 line won't take care of either of these pests.

Alright, I'm really not loking for anything to take care of flatworms or pyramellids..I was looking because I thought it was a cool looking wrasse lol.

So, if I got a McCosker's Flasher and a Whip Fin Fairy, would they get along, or are they too similar? That's also including while they're in a 29 breeder for a QT period; it would be just these two in there. Also, do the fairy wrasses have as big a difference in coloration between males and females as the flashers?

There's usually quite a big color difference between males and females, fairy or flasher. Sometimes a female will transition to male though if there are other males of another species in the tank.

I say those two are fine together. If you want to be extra sure, add them at the same time. The smaller they are, the more readily they'll adjust to another. As long as one isn't a full grown, dominant male, I wouldn't worry.

Sidenote - If you're keeping a single male flasher of one species, it can be advisable to keep it with another male of another species so they won't lose their color. Do realize a male will do better with a few females (not to imply he won't be fine alone - I said better).
