I've had great success with my fish using only rods soaked in SELCON and seaweed sheets every so often as Rod's contain some algae and just about everything else the tank needs. When I first got my blue hippo it came down with something like velvet and it had spread to some of my other fish and I had to go to town couple days rite after getting it for a few days and nobody in my house knew how to make the concoctions from the fridge. I bought some Selcon and used and old ice tray, made daily sections soaked in selcon and garlic (although I think this does nothin other than entice appetite) and told my dad to soak one a day in tank water and pour it in. When I cam back, my fish were looking better. I continued the regimen and beat it. I have never had any other issues with my fish since using selcon and their colors are amazingly bright. Read the reviews, I've even heard of someone beatin HLLE with it. Sorry for the long story but my point is I think the Selcon stuff will help. Good Luck

i forgot to mention I use a drop of selcon in my chunk of rods reef every day as well.

My 6" sailfin tang had HLLE when i got it, and all those symptoms went away in a few weeks, maybe 2 months tops by feeding the way I do, giving the tangs selcon soaked nori at least 1x a week, and as much food as they want to eat.

Doc Frag knows where I got my sailfin from, and the former owner is a 3reefer as well. The former owner was amazed that the HLLE went away so quickly. Disco eats like pig, always has, but the former owner would not feed nori or plant matter ever.

Formula 2, I used that for years before I found Rod's reef. it is a good food, but has a gel binder that I don't like.

I try not to feed any flake food because it is so full of phosphates and bad stuff. I am just fending off some cyano and I can see that not feeding flake has considerably helped.

I can't believe no one mentioned this, but one of the main causes of HLLE is stray voltage. Make sure you are running a grounding probe if you're not already.

Not all flake food has phosphates and nasty stuff, but I know of one guy that had issues with other brands. He is under skimmed and that one flake food caused algae issues. He switched to aqueon flake food, and the problem resolved itself with some husbandry.

I feed aqueon flake food in my auto feeder.
